Three years after the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in southern Ukraine, the empty 2,000-square-kilometer reservoir bed is transforming into a sprawling willow forest and wildlife habitat, according to field findings released by Ukrainian scientists in May 2026. The June 6, 2023, explosion of the dam by Russian occupying forces flooded roughly 80 settlements, destroyed local ecosystems, and left behind a stark mud desert. Today, however, researchers documenting the area observe rapid natural regeneration, with dense vegetation and returning fauna occupying the reclaimed landscape.
Scientific Expedition Uncovers Rapid Forest Growth at Novovorontsovka
During a May 2026 field expedition, scientists shifted their focus from previous survey sites to Novovorontsovka, representing the widest point of the former reservoir where the distance to the occupied left bank spans 13,500 meters, according to details shared with UAnimals by botanist and Doctor of Biological Sciences Ivan Moysienko. By 2026, plants relying on animals and insects for seed distribution play an increasingly vital role in the ecosystem. This shift indicates a growing and stabilizing animal population within the newly formed landscape.
Zoologist Oleksiy Vasylyuk, head of the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group, surveyed a narrow 200-meter strip along the shore due to ongoing security restrictions. Animal tracks observed by the team confirm that foxes, jackals, and polecats are steadily colonizing the new forest. Bird populations near the water bodies now include protected species such as the black-headed bunting and the red-backed shrike. Vasylyuk noted that the acoustic environment is striking, marked by the simultaneous songs of hundreds of nightingales in a density rarely found elsewhere in Europe.
Future Monitoring and Ecological Debate
Spiderwebs, completely absent during the early post-disaster years, now cling to researchers immediately upon entering the forest canopy, serving as another visual indicator of booming insect populations. The research team plans a follow-up expedition in fall 2026 to measure tree heights, calculate biomass, and advance ongoing carbon balance research regarding the Kakhovka willows.

The unexpected emergence of the forest has fueled wider discussions regarding the long-term management of the site. While certain groups debate proposals to eventually rebuild the Kakhovka Reservoir, others advocate for the permanent preservation of the restored Velykyi Luh historical landscape.
