Robert Baxter has been named president and CEO of MercyOne, effective June 22, 2026. Baxter succeeds Bob Ritz, who retired in January after nearly a decade leading the health system. Interim President and CEO Michael Taylor will remain in the role through July 1 to ensure a smooth transition.

Experience and Strategic Vision

Baxter brings over 30 years of healthcare experience, most recently serving as president of the Toledo market for Bon Secours Mercy Health, the largest healthcare system in Ohio. In that role, he developed strategies to enhance trauma performance, improve staff retention and recruitment, and expand regional partnerships, including achieving a CMS Five-Star rating for Mercy Health.

In his new position, Baxter will focus on setting strategic direction, advancing MercyOne’s mission, and ensuring operational excellence. The organization employs more than 20,000 people and operates over 230 clinics, medical centers, hospitals, and care locations across Iowa and beyond.
