France’s Blood Donation System Faces Seasonal Challenges as Summer Approaches
France’s Établissement français du sang (EFS) is experiencing a critical shortage of blood supplies ahead of the summer months, with national stocks dropping to approximately 70,000 blood bags in May. Olivier Durat, director of communication for EFS Grand Est, confirmed that the organization anticipated difficulties during the month due to public holidays, a prediction that has proven accurate. The EFS aims to increase national reserves to 100,000 bags by July 14, requiring a significant surge in donations during June to reach 90,000 bags, according to internal reports.
Seasonal Fluctuations and Public Health Implications
Seasonal variations in blood donations are a recurring issue for blood banks worldwide, and France is no exception. Public holidays, school breaks, and vacations often lead to reduced donor turnout, creating pressure on blood supply chains. The EFS has historically relied on targeted campaigns to encourage donations during these periods. In 2023, the organization reported a 12% decline in donations during June compared to May, highlighting the urgency of its current efforts.
“The challenge is compounded by the fact that hospital demand remains steady throughout the year,” said Dr. Claire Martin, a transfusion medicine specialist at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm). “Without sufficient donations, blood banks risk disruptions in patient care, particularly for surgeries and emergency treatments.”
EFS Strategies to Address the Shortfall
To mitigate the shortage, the EFS has launched a multi-pronged approach, including mobile donation units in high-traffic areas and partnerships with local communities to raise awareness. The organization also emphasized the safety and simplicity of the donation process, which takes about 15 minutes and can save up to three lives per donation. “Every eligible donor has the power to make a difference,” said Durat. “We urge people to prioritize blood donation during this critical period.”
The EFS has also collaborated with regional health authorities to streamline distribution, ensuring that areas with the highest need receive priority. According to a June 2023 report by the French Ministry of Health, 85% of blood donations in the Grand Est region were allocated to hospitals in the first half of the year, underscoring the importance of regional coordination.

Eligible donors are encouraged to visit the EFS website or contact local blood donation centers to schedule an appointment. Requirements include being between 18 and 70 years old, weighing at least 50 kilograms, and being in good health. The EFS also recommends maintaining hydration and a balanced diet before donation to minimize side effects such as dizziness.
