The Finnish Red Cross (SPR) has dispatched a healthcare specialist to Venezuela to conduct a rapid assessment of medical needs following two major earthquakes. The mission, confirmed by the organization, marks the initial phase of Finland’s humanitarian response to the disaster.
Assessing the Medical Crisis
The specialist arrived early Monday morning as part of a broader international effort. According to Toni Jokinen, head of the SPR’s international aid support and coordination unit, the primary objective is to evaluate local healthcare infrastructure and determine the specific medical supplies and personnel required to support the survivors.
The SPR maintains a standby capacity for disaster response, allowing the organization to mobilize additional aid workers and equipment, such as mobile field hospitals, should the situation necessitate it. Beyond personnel, the organization has authorized financial support for the operation from its internal disaster relief fund.

Venezuela was struck by two significant earthquakes between Wednesday and Thursday, Finnish time, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the magnitude scale. The tremors caused widespread structural failure, including the collapse of buildings in urban areas like Caraballeda.
As of Saturday, official figures provided by Jorge Rodriguez, head of the National Assembly, indicate that at least 1,430 people have died. Search and rescue operations remain active, with authorities reporting that tens of thousands of individuals are still listed as missing.
