Google employees held a demonstration at the company’s Mountain View headquarters on Thursday to demand enhanced job security protections, including voluntary exit packages and guaranteed severance standards. Organized by the Alphabet Workers Union, the protest follows a series of layoffs that have impacted thousands of employees across the parent company, Alphabet, since 2023.
Protesters Demand Changes to Workforce Management
Roughly 100 Google employees gathered outside the company’s visitor center on Thursday, many wearing black shirts and carrying placards. The demonstration centered on a petition signed by more than 4,500 employees, which was addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai and senior leadership. According to the Alphabet Workers Union, the petition calls for four specific policy changes:
- Voluntary Exit Packages: Establishing a formal policy for voluntary departures before initiating mandatory layoffs.
- Severance Guarantees: Standardizing severance packages for all affected workers.
- Performance Rating Reform: Ending the use of forced-distribution performance quotas.
- Flexible Severance: Allowing employees to receive severance as extended paid leave.
Parul Koul, a Google software engineer and president of the Alphabet Workers Union, stated that the group attempted to deliver the petition to leadership last year without receiving a substantive response. On Thursday, representatives of the union attempted to deliver the updated petition to the offices of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, as well as senior vice presidents Rick Osterloh and Nick Fox.
Industry Context and Rolling Layoffs
The protest reflects growing labor anxiety within the technology sector. Since 2022, major tech firms including Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon have conducted multiple rounds of personnel reductions. Alphabet, which employs approximately 191,000 people, laid off 12,000 workers in early 2023 and has since engaged in several smaller, targeted rounds of downsizing.
For many employees, the uncertainty surrounding these rolling layoffs has changed the internal culture. Nobel Barakat, a Google software engineer who attended the protest, noted that employees are increasingly worried about their job status, leading to longer working hours in an attempt to avoid negative performance ratings.
A History of Internal Activism
Thursday’s event continues a long-standing pattern of employee activism at Google. The company has previously seen internal pushback on several high-profile initiatives:
- Project Maven (2018): Over 4,000 employees opposed a Pentagon contract involving the use of AI for drone footage analysis.
- Sexual Misconduct Walkout (2018): Approximately 20,000 employees walked out to protest the company’s handling of sexual misconduct allegations against senior executives.
- Project Nimbus (2024): Employees held sit-ins to protest a cloud-computing contract with the Israeli government, which led to the termination of several participants.
Most recently, internal tensions have surfaced regarding the company’s involvement in defense-related AI projects. Reports indicate that a Google DeepMind researcher resigned this week following the company’s agreement to allow the Pentagon to use its AI for classified operations, a deal that roughly 600 employees had previously urged the company to reject.
Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the protest or the petition. As the company continues to integrate generative AI into its core business, the tension between management’s strategic shifts and employee demands for stability remains a focal point for the workforce.
