Deportation Ordered for Bishnoi Gang Associate
The Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) of Canada has ordered the deportation of Sahibjot Singh.
A Network of Global Intimidation
Appearing via video conference from his lawyer’s office in Edmonton, Singh conceded to the deportation order. While he denied formal membership in the Bishnoi group, the CBSA presented evidence linking him to the organization, an outfit notorious for orchestrating contract killings and extortion schemes from abroad.

Board member Trent Cook, in his ruling, underscored the international reach of these operations. Investigations—including intercepted communications between suspects in Canada and associates in France, Portugal, and the Netherlands—revealed a sophisticated hierarchy. The IRB described the group as a “longstanding, unified collective” that uses violence to target South Asian Canadians, threatening homes and businesses to extract payments.
The Fight for Public Transparency
Before the hearing, Singh’s legal counsel requested a publication ban. They argued that naming him would invite “potential retaliation” from criminal elements and create stigma, further contending that media coverage would prejudice pending criminal charges against him in Canada.
Global News challenged the request, and the proceedings remained open. The World Sikh Organization of Canada also pushed for transparency, arguing the public has a right to understand how these networks operate and the extent of their influence. The IRB eventually ruled that the public interest in law enforcement’s response outweighed the applicant’s privacy concerns.
Cracking Down on Transnational Extortion
Singh’s removal is one piece of a wider push by Canadian authorities to dismantle international extortion rings.
Enforcement Statistics
CBSA data reveals the scale of this crackdown:

- Total Investigations: 484 cases opened by national extortion task forces.
- Removal Orders: 139 orders issued as of June 18, 2024.
- Confirmed Removals: 81 individuals have already been removed from Canada.
International Pressure Mounts
Many of those under investigation entered the country on work or study permits. The pressure is mounting internationally, too. On July 7, 2024, U.S. authorities charged Lawrence Bishnoi and his North American lieutenant, Goldy Brar, with racketeering and involvement in the 2023 assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. Canadian authorities continue to coordinate with international partners to dismantle these transnational criminal structures.
