The Declared Age Range API allows developers to identify if a user falls into specific categories defined by Texas law: under 13, 13-15, 16-17, or over 18. This API also provides a signal regarding the verification method used, such as a government ID or credit card, to ensure the age assurance meets legal standards.
To handle “significant changes” to an app—which Texas law identifies as including changes to an app’s age rating—Apple introduced the Significant Change API within the PermissionKit framework. When a developer triggers this API, the child or teen user sees a system dialog requesting parental consent. Access to the new feature or the app itself can be restricted until the guardian approves.
Parental Control and Consent Revocation
Under SB2420, parents and guardians in Texas have the legal right to withdraw consent for any app. Apple is implementing this via the App Store, which will block the app from launching on the minor’s device once consent is revoked.
To keep developers informed, Apple is providing server notifications. These alerts notify developers when a guardian has withdrawn approval, allowing the app to handle the session termination or data requirements accordingly.
