An Irish law student has been charged with explosives possession following the interception of a sophisticated bomb near the UK-Irish border, according to the Garda Síochána. Isobella Perrie Sullivan, 25, of Clane, County Kildare, appeared at a special sitting of the Trim district court on Friday evening where she was charged in connection with the security operation.
Border Interception and Court Appearance
Members of the Garda Síochána’s special detective unit intercepted a vehicle traveling on the N2 south of Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, on Wednesday afternoon. Police targeted the transport based on intelligence information regarding dissident republican activity, according to Garda statements. The Irish Defence Forces explosive ordnance disposal team subsequently examined the vehicle at the roadside.
During Friday’s court session, Perrie Sullivan was granted conditional bail and remanded in custody pending a subsequent bail hearing scheduled for Monday. Gardaí also detained a second individual, a man in his 40s, who remained in custody on Friday under offenses against the state legislation.
Explosive Device Analysis
Garda sources described the recovered bomb as highly sophisticated, fully completed, and ready for immediate deployment. The device contained a power unit, a detonator, and military-grade explosives identified by investigators as semtex. Security sources indicated the device was likely intended for use as an under-car explosive in an attack targeting Northern Ireland.
Security analysts noted that the high level of mechanical and electrical skill required to construct the device points toward individual radicalization through online channels, contrasting with traditional, highly organized networks. While past attacks involving dissident republicans have frequently utilized cruder pipe bombs, this configuration demanded specialized initiating hardware and timing components.
Garda Commissioner Assessment
Speaking to media at a Garda graduation event in County Tipperary on Friday, Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed the gravity of the seizure. According to Kelly, the operation blocked a device that possessed the capacity to inflict severe destruction.
“To be clear, what we found was an extremely significant seizure,” Kelly told reporters. “So this was an explosive device. Any seizure of this nature is really concerning. However, we certainly know that there are a small minority of dissident republicans who did not agree with the Good Friday agreement, they did not put weapons and explosives out of use.”
Kelly emphasized that law enforcement agencies continue to maintain close operational links with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and UK intelligence services to counter ongoing threats from radicalized groups rejecting the 1998 peace settlement.
