< p>Destructive wildfires driven by intense heat and unfavorable winds have scorched over 22,000 hectares of land in the Gironde department of southwestern France, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate. According to statements from the French Ministry of the Interior and local prefectures, authorities have mobilized approximately 1,000 military personnel alongside thousands of firefighters to contain the blazes, which officials describe as unprecedented in scale for the region.
Unprecedented Scale of the Gironde Blazes
The primary fire in Gironde, which originated north of the Arcachon basin, has consumed 22,000 hectares and destroyed roughly 100 buildings, according to updated figures from the Gironde prefecture. Sophie Brocas, the prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, stated during a press briefing that the fire has taken on an unprecedented magnitude and is tracking eastward toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Local authorities have ordered the preventive evacuation of numerous municipalities, including Lège-Cap-Ferret. Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez reported that cumulative evacuations across the affected zones have reached more than 140,000 people since the emergency operations began.
While overnight rain and rising humidity levels have provided some temporary relief to emergency crews, regional officials maintain that the conditions remain highly volatile.
Government Mobilization and Military Reinforcements
In response to the escalating crisis, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an interministerial crisis cell at Matignon, bringing together representatives from the ministries of the interior, armed forces, health, transport, and environment. Following instructions from President Emmanuel Macron, the government deployed an additional 500 military personnel to support firefighters on the ground, bringing the total military deployment to around 1,000 troops. Furthermore, the government announced the shipment of masks FFP2 to Gironde to protect emergency personnel and local populations from hazardous smoke.
Wildfire Activity Across Other French Regions
Beyond the southwest, emergency services are actively battling significant fires in several other parts of the country. In the Var department, firefighters are struggling to contain persistent flare-ups of the Pontevès fire, which has forced new precautionary evacuations in the communities of Châteauvert and parts of Correns. In the Hautes-Alpes, a lightning-triggered vegetation fire in a steep mountain corridor between L’Argentière-La Bessée and Freissinières has consumed 460 hectares.
