Japan’s Disaster Management Agency to Set Up Regional Offices in 45 Local Governments

Forty-Five Bids Flood Cabinet Secretariat Ahead of November Launch

As of Friday, a total of 45 local governments and regional groups across Japan have submitted bids to host regional offices for the country’s upcoming disaster management agency, according to Jiji Press. The new national body is scheduled for launch in November.

Prefectures Account for Half of Total Applications

According to officials from the Cabinet Secretariat, 23 of the applicants are prefectural governments. This figure includes municipalities making joint bids, accounting for roughly half of Japan’s prefectures.

High Seismic Vulnerability Shapes Local Proposals

Many of the municipal and prefectural applicants are located in areas that suffered severe damage in past major earthquakes.

Pushing Back Against Tokyo Administrative Overconcentration

Beyond disaster preparedness, several local governments stated that hosting the agency’s regional offices will help correct the historical overconcentration of administrative functions in Tokyo. Officials from the bidding regions noted that establishing these offices outside the capital contributes directly to the revitalization of regional economies.

Ongoing Review and Upcoming Operational Rollout

The Cabinet Secretariat continues to review the submissions as preparations move forward for the agency’s launch in November.
