SpaceX Starship Flight 13 Achieves Intact Splashdown and Tests Starlink V3 Satellites

SpaceX successfully completed a major test of its Starship megarocket on Friday, sending the 408-foot-tall vehicle halfway around the world from South Texas to an intact splashdown in the Indian Ocean. According to SpaceX, the flight marked the 13th full-scale test of the Starship system and provided engineers with crucial data on the vehicle’s heat shield and upgraded hardware.

Starship Reaches Indian Ocean Intact

The uncrewed rocket lifted off from Starbase, Texas, at 5:51 p.m. CDT, powered by 33 methane-fueled Raptor engines on its Super Heavy booster. While previous water landings ended with conflagrations, this vehicle gently tipped over and came to rest floating west of Australia. SpaceX communications manager Dan Huot noted on the company’s live webcast that reaching the water with an intact vehicle was a “dream scenario” for gathering thermal data.

Engineers used drones to inspect the spacecraft’s heat shield after splashdown. The shield features more than 18,000 ceramic tiles designed to withstand temperatures up to 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit (1,430 degrees Celsius) during atmospheric reentry. According to Shana Diez, SpaceX’s director of Starship flight reliability, the mission yielded critical insights from a demonstration deorbit burn performed by the ship’s Raptor engines.

Next Steps and Tower Catch Plans

Following the successful flight, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk stated on the social media platform X that the company will attempt to catch the Starship spacecraft with the launch tower’s mechanical arms on the next flight, provided mission data reviews reveal no hidden issues. SpaceX has already executed this catching maneuver with the larger Super Heavy booster, though the booster itself experienced a hard splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday after some of its Raptor engines failed to restart for the final landing burn.

An orbital-class flight and subsequent tower catch will clear the path for SpaceX to begin deploying operational Starlink V3 satellites. During Friday’s suborbital test, Starship successfully opened its payload bay door and deployed a stack of 20 upgraded Starlink V3 flat-panel satellites using a Pez-like deployer. Ground teams established communication links and downloaded telemetry before the test satellites reentered the atmosphere.

Implications for NASA Artemis Moon Missions

Establishing reliable orbital flights and ship-to-ship refueling is a prerequisite for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface. NASA is partnering with SpaceX and Blue Origin to develop human-rated versions of Starship and the Blue Moon lander. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman posted on X following the launch that Starship’s capabilities will be game-changing for lunar exploration once fully operational.

Achieving orbital refueling will require multiple rapid launches and dockings in Earth orbit to transfer cryogenic propellants between vehicles.
