Next MacBook Pro: Thinner Design, OLED Display, and Dynamic Island

Apple is developing a high-end MacBook Pro featuring a major overhaul, pairing an OLED display with a significantly thinner design according to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The upcoming laptop marks the most substantial external changes for the product line since 2021, when Apple established the current 14-inch and 16-inch form factor.

Breaking the 2021 Form Factor Baseline

Every 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro manufactured since 2021 maintains a thickness of 0.61 inches (15.5mm) across four distinct silicon chip generations. The upcoming revision is slated to be noticeably thinner and lighter. According to industry reports, replacing the traditional mini-LED backlight with a hybrid OLED panel removes a physical layer from the display lid, allowing for the most pronounced reduction in thickness to occur in the upper half of the machine.

The End of the Notch and a Dynamic Island Shift

Industry supply chain data indicates that the physical display notch will be replaced by a hole-punch camera. Research firm Omdia first outlined this modification in a manufacturing roadmap, which was subsequently corroborated by Bloomberg reports. The cutout is expected to feature a pill-shaped configuration designed to house an interactive Dynamic Island, replacing the notch that has divided the menu bar since the 2021 redesign.

Software Alignment and Shrinking Bezels

Interface elements such as the Spotlight “Search or Ask” utility feature a dark, pill-shaped aesthetic tailored specifically to accommodate a display cutout of that geometry. Alongside the camera modification, display bezels are projected to shrink. Omdia reports that Samsung Display will supply 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch panels—fractionally larger than the current 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch configurations—which will decrease border dimensions within a similar overall footprint.

Reinforced Hinge Engineering

Structural adjustments will also address physical stability during daily use. Apple is reportedly engineering a reinforced hinge mechanism designed to eliminate display wobble when users tap the screen. It remains unconfirmed whether the redesigned lid will tilt backward past the limits of current models, which stop early due to structural housing constraints.

Clamshell Continuity and Component Bottlenecks

Core functional elements of the laptop will remain consistent with previous generations. Bloomberg reported that the machine will retain standard keyboard and trackpad layouts, maintaining a conventional clamshell design rather than adopting a detachable or convertible architecture. Essential input ports reinstated during the 2021 redesign—including HDMI, MagSafe, and the SD card slot—are expected to stay.
