The Google Gemini app is rolling out an interface update on Android and the web that streamlines its model picker and task management features, according to recent updates tracked by 9to5Google. The changes remove redundant menu steps for complex reasoning tasks and reorganize task lists to improve user navigation.
Gemini Simplifies Extended Thinking Controls
Previously, the Gemini app used a two-stage dropdown menu to adjust reasoning capabilities, letting users toggle between a “Standard” default mode and an “Extended thinking” mode for complex problem-solving. According to 9to5Google, Google has removed the explicit “Standard” listing entirely. The interface now defaults to standard behavior automatically while showing “Extended thinking” as a direct, one-step selection process on both Android devices and web platforms.
Instead of navigating multi-tier menus, users can trigger deep reasoning layers with a single tap.
Android Task Management Gets Top-Tab Layout
Alongside the reasoning toggle update, the Gemini Spark feature on Android is transitioning to a top-tab navigation layout. According to reporting by 9to5Google, the interface now categorizes tasks into distinct tabs labeled:
- All
- Scheduled
- Needs input
- In progress
- Completed
In addition to the new tabs, the previous menu button located in the top-right corner of the interface has been replaced with a dedicated magnifying glass icon. Tapping this icon activates a “Search tasks” function, allowing users to locate specific reminders or workflows quickly. These task management improvements arrive shortly after Google AI Pro subscribers gained initial access to Spark features.
Granular Notification Controls Under Development
Google is also preparing a suite of new notification settings for the Gemini app on Android, although these alerts are not yet widely available to all users. According to 9to5Google, the upcoming controls will let users manage push alerts for four specific categories:
- Daily brief: Delivers a personalized look at the day ahead.
- Scheduled actions: Provides updates on recurring tasks and automation.
- Responses: Notifies users when complex, time-consuming queries finish processing.
- Product updates and tips: Shares news regarding new features, model upgrades, and usage tips.
Once fully deployed, these notification toggles will appear within the app’s account menu.
