The facility’s Gynecological Oncology, Breast Unit, and Pancreas Unit all exceeded standard performance metrics, reinforcing the hospital’s position as a referral center within the Lombardy oncology network.
Gynecological Oncology Exceeds Regional Caseload Targets
According to the 2026 monitoring data, the Gynecological Oncology department at San Gerardo registered a surgical volume for ovarian cancer treatment well above the regional average. The unit has already surpassed the regional target of 30 annual cases, confirming a high-volume and specialized clinical caseload for complex gynecological malignancies.

Breast Unit Surgical Volume Triples Regional Threshold
The Breast Unit at San Gerardo dei Tintori recorded 444 surgical interventions for breast cancer, more than three times the regional target of 135 annual procedures. According to Dr. Riccardo Giovanazzi, director of the Breast Unit, this high volume reflects the strong appeal and established expertise of the senology hub.
“In addition to the elevated number of breast carcinoma cases treated each year at IRCCS San Gerardo, which testifies to the consolidated experience of Breast Surgery and confirms the strong attractiveness of the Monza senological hub, quality indicators highlight excellent levels of appropriateness in surgical care,” said Dr. Riccardo Giovanazzi.
Giovanazzi also noted that the department maintains a minimal rate of re-interventions on the same patient, ranking among the best nationally. This metric serves as an indicator of surgical precision and meticulous pre-operative planning, alongside outcomes achieved in immediate breast reconstruction performed concurrently with demolitive surgery.
Pancreas Unit Achieves Near-Zero Mortality
The Pancreas Unit at San Gerardo recorded a 90-day postoperative mortality rate close to 0%, falling well below the permitted regional threshold. The unit reached 66 pancreatic resection surgeries over a three-year period, clearing the minimum volume requirement of 50 cases mandated for regional reference centers.
“Our goal was to strengthen the role of IRCCS San Gerardo among Lombardy Pancreas Units, increasing the number of surgeries and reducing peri-operative mortality at 90 days,” said Dr. Christian Cotsoglou, director of Surgery II, which houses the Pancreas Unit.
Cotsoglou attributed the milestone to a multidisciplinary team structure, case manager coordination, and support from the strategic leadership and the network organization established by the Lombardy Region. Over three years, the department doubled its surgical output while driving mortality rates down to near-zero levels.
