Universal Orlando Updates Nintendo Parks Partnership

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood officially opened to the public on February 17, 2023, bringing the iconic video game franchise to life through immersive themed environments, interactive gameplay, and the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge attraction, according to official statements from Universal Destinations & Experiences. The Southern California debut marked the second iteration of the themed land globally, following the 2021 launch at Universal Studios Japan.

The centerpiece of the land is Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, a dark ride utilizing augmented reality (AR) headwear mounted to Mario cap visors. According to Universal Creative executives, riders steer through interactive courses while collecting coins and throwing shells at classic franchise villains alongside Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach. The ride vehicle system moves along a track while blending physical sets with projection-mapped imagery visible through the AR lenses.

Beyond the primary ride, the land features Toadstool Cafe, the signature dining location overseen by Chef Toad, serving themed menu items such as Mario Burger (with bacon and mushroom) and Super Mushroom Soup. Guests also interact with the environment using Power-Up Bands—wristbands synced with the official Universal Studios Hollywood app. According to park operations, these bands allow visitors to punch question-mark blocks, collect digital coins, and unlock a final boss battle against Bowser Jr. after completing a series of key challenges scattered throughout the level.

Integration with Universal Destinations Strategy

The launch of the Hollywood installation preceded further expansion of the Nintendo partnership across Universal’s theme park portfolio. Universal Studios Florida opened its own iteration of Super Nintendo World as part of the massive Epic Universe theme park project, which debuted in 2025. Universal Creative designed the Hollywood land within a restricted footprint of the upper lot, utilizing vertical space and forced perspective techniques similar to those employed by Nintendo creative fellow Shigeru Miyamoto and Universal design teams in Osaka.

According to tourism industry reports published by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), the introduction of Super Nintendo World significantly boosted attendance figures for Universal Studios Hollywood during the post-pandemic recovery period. The land’s reliance on proprietary wearable technology mirrors broader attractions industry trends toward gamification and guest interactivity.

Visitor Information and Operations

Access to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood is included with regular park admission, though peak capacity days often require visitors to secure a virtual line reservation via the Universal Studios Hollywood mobile app. Power-Up Bands are sold separately at various retail carts and shops within the land. Height requirements for Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge specify that guests must be at least 40 inches (102 cm) tall to ride, with children under 48 inches (122 cm) requiring a supervising companion.
