Korea AI Film Directors Association Launches in Seoul
The Korea AI Film Directors Association (KAIFD) launched on July 15 in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, establishing a non-profit organization to advocate for creators utilizing generative artificial intelligence and build a reliable industrial framework. The group’s main office is located at 126 Achasan-ro, Seongdong-gu, where members established official articles of incorporation and elected executive leadership to bridge the gap between AI researchers, technical operators, and production environments.
Choi Min-chul Takes the Helm as Inaugural Head
Choi Min-chul, representative of Choi Cine and nomorefrog™, was chosen as the inaugural head of the association. Choi emphasized during the founding general meeting that the core of art lies in human narrative and unique perspective rather than the technological tool itself, signaling an intent to foster an ecosystem where creators can establish their own distinctive worldviews.
The executive board includes Vice President Moon Jung-ho, directors Jeong Se-jin and Ahn Jung-hyun, Secretary-General Joo Min-yeop, and Auditor Choi Seung-heon. These officials will direct policies as generative AI permeates nearly every stage of modern filmmaking. The work spans scenario conception, image and concept work, voice and sound synthesis, and post-production editing.
The association contends that as these production methods evolve, a director’s judgment and intentionality become even more vital. This requires concrete standards to elevate AI-driven production beyond a passing trend into a distinct artistic field.
Securing Creator Rights and Legal Frameworks
A primary objective for the newly formed association is securing creator rights and establishing legal frameworks. KAIFD plans to conduct legal and institutional research to address emerging ownership issues.
Those priorities include the allocation of rights for final AI-generated outputs, the legal scope for utilizing digital actors and synthesized voices, and regulations governing secondary derivative works. The group also aims to build standardized credit systems to ensure accurate attribution for contributions across planning, directing, music, and performance.
Enforcing Strict Ethical Standards and Deepfake Rules
Alongside copyright protection, the organization has implemented ethical guidelines centered on a “verify, consent, and responsibility” principle regarding source materials such as images, sound sources, and fonts.
Under these guidelines, utilizing or modifying a real person’s likeness or voice requires mandatory prior agreement from the individual. The association has also outlined strict accountability measures to counter the dissemination of false information or defamation via deepfake technology.
Additionally, the group recommends clear visual labeling on all virtual scenes to prevent audiences from mistaking generated footage for factual records.
Training Programs and Global Expansion Plans
To cultivate professional talent, KAIFD plans to run practical training and workshop programs covering the entire filmmaking pipeline from initial planning to final editing. The association also aims to expand touchpoints with the public and industry professionals by hosting screenings and film festivals.
Membership is divided into regular, associate, special, and corporate tiers to encourage broad participation from across the arts and culture sectors. Furthermore, the association intends to facilitate international institutional cooperation to support the global expansion of domestic AI-produced works.
