A Ten-Decade Narrative Told by Ten Compositors
According to Opera Philadelphia, the production follows the life of a character named Sue from birth to death, with cabaret artist and MacArthur fellow Justin Vivian Bond in the title role. Each decade of Sue’s life spans less than eight minutes and is written by a different composer. The roster features Andy Akiho, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Nathalie Joachim, Errollyn Wallen, Kamala Sankaram, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Rene Orth, Dan Schlosberg, and Alistair Coleman. This collaborative fragmentation breaks from the traditional operatic format of a single composer maintaining a uniform soundscape throughout an entire work, intentionally matching the stylistic shifts to the changing identities of the protagonist over time.
Breaking Traditional Operatic Conventions
Jackson’s first venture into opera, building on his established theatrical work examining identity, race, and social structures. Anthony Roth Costanzo, general manager and president of Opera Philadelphia, stated that he initially feared the unconventional project might fail on opening night, but the audience reception—ranging from laughter to absolute silence—confirmed its success. The digital recording was captured live during performances on February 5 and 6, 2026, at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, under the musical direction of Caren Levine.
Digital Distribution and Educational Partnerships
The upcoming release on BCM+D Records, a label connected to Temple University, highlights a broader industry shift toward digital recordings to expand the reach of limited-run stage productions. The collaboration also integrates university students into music production, marketing, and cultural management roles. The cast features performers Kiera Duffy, Imara Miles, Nicky Spence, and Nicholas Newton, who portray multiple characters across Sue’s life as the production continues its push toward innovative, contemporary storytelling in American opera.
