Patients taking Ozempic and Mounjaro faced a 37 percent higher risk of hair loss, while those taking other diabetes medications faced a 68 percent higher risk, according to the British Medical Journal study. Researchers compared patients with diabetes taking these specific medications against control groups taking older treatments like gliptins or gliflozines. The resulting hair thinning typically occurs diffusely across the entire scalp rather than leaving distinct bald patches, making the overall hairstyle look noticeably sparser.

This phenomenon is linked to telogen effluvium, a temporary form of hair shedding that frequently follows rapid weight loss, severe dieting, or major physiological stress. During telogen effluvium, individual hair follicles prematurely halt their growth cycle and enter a resting phase that lasts between two and four months before shedding. Healthy scalps naturally shed about 100 hairs daily, but affected individuals can lose up to 300 hairs per day.
