Months on Life Support Ends in Discharge
A 43-year-old Nipah virus survivor has walked out of Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala.
Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan announced the discharge. The patient, a resident of Farook, beat a severe zoonotic infection that carries a mortality rate as high as 70 percent.
A Dangerous Misdiagnosis and Rapid Decline
The ordeal began on June 1. Seeking care at a private hospital, the man presented with a fever, sore throat, and body pain, according to Press Trust of India reports cited by Deccan Herald. Medical staff misdiagnosed the illness as a standard flu and sent him home.
He returned on June 7 as his symptoms sharply worsened. Fatigue, disorientation, and slurred speech set in. A transfer to a second private facility in Kozhikode followed, but his condition collapsed around June 9. Mechanical ventilation became immediately necessary.
Multidisciplinary Intervention at State Facility
Hospital staff rushed biological samples—including blood, urine, and nasal secretions—to the National Institute of Virology in Pune. Testing confirmed a Nipah virus infection.
State protocol dictated a June 11 transfer to the Government Medical College Hospital. There, multidisciplinary medical teams fought to save him.
A High-Stakes Regional Threat
The Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen primarily hosted by fruit bats. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). First identified during a 1999 outbreak in Malaysia and Singapore, the virus triggers severe encephalitis—marked by brain swelling, confusion, and drowsiness. Treatment remains strictly limited to supportive care and symptom management.
Fruit bats inhabit wide regions across Asia and the South Pacific. Yet in India, cases remain concentrated in Kerala and West Bengal.
