The Evolution of Natural Gas Generation at Rayburn Energy Station
The Rayburn Energy Station in Sherman, Texas, exemplifies the modern expansion of natural gas infrastructure. According to reporting from the Grand Forks Herald, the facility was originally constructed by Panda Power Funds LP and began commercial operations in August 2014 before Rayburn Electric Cooperative acquired it in 2023. The plant’s original combined-cycle configuration features two Siemens combustion turbines and one steam turbine, generating 758 megawatts of baseload power. Siemens manufactured these turbines at its facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.
To bolster grid reliability, Rayburn is constructing an adjacent station featuring 10 peaking “black start capable” turbines built by Siemens in Sweden. Each of these peaker units is rated at 57 megawatts. According to the Grand Forks Herald, “black start” capability allows the turbines to start without external power, enabling them to help restart other generators following a major power failure.
The rise of U.S. natural gas did not happen overnight. In 1977, the newly established Department of Energy officially declared that natural gas had no future, with first deputy secretary Jack O’Leary describing it to The Energy Daily as a depleted resource. At the time, regulatory hurdles divided supplies into distinct categories such as intrastate and interstate gas, alongside complex price controls.
Technological innovation proved equally critical. While the oil industry experimented with angled drilling as early as the 1920s, horizontal drilling emerged in the 1980s alongside the refinement of hydraulic fracturing. Current Energy Mix and Market Integration
Today, the United States stands as the world’s largest producer and a net exporter of natural gas, accounting for roughly a quarter of global supply. According to Energy Information Administration data cited by the Grand Forks Herald, natural gas leads national electricity generation at 43 percent. Renewables follow at 24 to 30 percent depending on the season, nuclear energy provides just over 18 percent, and coal contributes slightly above 16 percent, with hydroelectric, wood, geothermal, and oil making up the remaining share.
