Egypt’s annual urban consumer price inflation quickened to 14.9% in July, driven largely by surging food and energy costs, according to data released by the official statistics agency CAPMAS. The reading marks a notable acceleration from June and puts mounting pressure on urban households as the central bank prepares its next monetary policy decisions.

CAPMAS Data Reveals Broad Price Pressures Across Urban Centers

Consumer prices in Egypt’s cities rose faster in July than in previous months, continuing an upward trajectory that has squeezed purchasing power over the past year. According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), the 14.9% annual rate reflects sustained increases in essential goods and transport services. Food and beverage prices, which carry the heaviest weight in the urban consumer basket, led the increases, alongside housing, water, electricity, and gas expenses.

The acceleration breaks a brief stabilization period observed earlier in the spring. Economists tracked by Reuters note that domestic supply chain bottlenecks, combined with the lingering pass-through effects of prior currency devaluations, continue to feed retail price inflation across major urban governorates including Cairo and Alexandria.

Central Bank Stance and Market Expectations

The latest inflation print complicates the outlook for the Central Bank of Egypt, which has deployed interest rate hikes to anchor inflation expectations. Monetary policymakers face a difficult balancing act between reining in price growth and supporting domestic economic activity. Analysts expect the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee to review these July figures closely during its upcoming meeting to determine whether further tightening is required to protect the local currency and stabilize domestic markets.
