A Ukrainian drone strike on the central Russian energy hub of Nizhnekamsk killed at least 13 people and wounded 48 others, according to a local press service statement issued Monday. The attack struck industrial and civilian targets over 1,000 kilometers from the border in the Tatarstan region, hitting the Taneco oil refinery and triggering a significant fire, according to the Ukrainian military and local officials.
Nizhnekamsk Drone Attack Casualties and Regional Impact
The strike in Tatarstan killed several Central Asian citizens and a child, according to regional statements. Radmir Belyayev, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk, confirmed via Telegram that unspecified industrial and civilian infrastructure had sustained direct hits during the overnight operation. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Kyiv of deliberately targeting civilians, while Russian investigators announced a criminal investigation into the incident as an act of terrorism.
The assault on Nizhnekamsk is part of an intensifying long-range campaign by Kyiv targeting Russian energy infrastructure. Ukrainian military officials confirmed that the overnight operation specifically targeted the Taneco oil refinery. According to the Ukrainian military, these sustained strikes against Russian refining facilities have generated domestic fuel shortages and reduced overall refining capacity across the country.
Strategic Aims of Kyiv’s Long-Range Drone Campaign
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the escalated air campaign, stating that its primary objective is to force Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations to end the more than four-year-old full-scale invasion. “We do deliver entirely justified responses, and every Russian strike will be met with our response. Russia’s war will be felt more and more at their own home — in Russia,” Zelenskyy said in a social media statement. Later on Monday, Kyiv reported that special drone forces also struck a Russian petrochemical plant in the Tyumen region.

The scale of aerial operations has escalated sharply on both sides. The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 126 drones in a parallel overnight attack. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight, though the ministry’s figures do not specify how many drones reached their intended targets or how many were successfully intercepted in the Tatarstan sector.
Frontline Artillery Strikes in Kharkiv
While long-range strikes hit central Russia, fighting along the front lines in Ukraine continued to generate civilian casualties. A Russian artillery strike killed five people in the village of Bugaivka, located in the Chuguiv district of the northeastern Kharkiv region, according to the regional prosecutor’s office.
“On August 10, Russian forces carried out a massive artillery strike on the residential area of the village of Bugaivka… Various houses were destroyed as a result of the enemy attack,” the prosecutor’s office stated on Telegram. The United Nations said that ongoing drone and missile strikes by both combatants have driven up civilian casualty counts across residential zones in Russia and Ukraine.
