Expanding Cord Care Access in Qatar

Sidra Medicine and The View Hospital have forged a strategic partnership to expand access to umbilical cord blood banking services in Qatar, according to a joint announcement reported by Gulf Times. The collaboration allows eligible maternity patients at The View Hospital to register for Sidra Medicine’s advanced stem cell preservation program as part of their routine care pathway.

Seamless Integration Into Maternity Care

Under the agreement signed by Mohammad al-Mana, acting chief executive officer and member of the Board of Governors at Sidra Medicine, and Yannis Angouras, hospital director at The View Hospital, expectant families can secure their newborn’s stem cells directly through their maternity care provider.

The collection process takes place immediately after the umbilical cord is clamped and cut. According to the announcement reported by Gulf Times, the procedure is entirely painless and risk-free for both mother and infant. Because umbilical cord blood can only be harvested at the time of birth, the partnership integrates this one-time collection opportunity directly into the hospital’s maternity services.

Domestic Cryogenic Storage at Sidra Medicine

Once collected, samples are transported to Sidra Medicine’s specialized Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility. According to Gulf Times, this is the only facility in Qatar capable of local cord blood storage, providing families the advantage of keeping biological samples within the country for optimal quality and immediate access.

The facility handles processing, testing, and long-term cryogenic storage under internationally recognized quality standards. Beyond cord blood, Sidra Medicine’s GMP facility prepares bone marrow stem cells for transplantation and produces advanced cell and gene therapy products for pediatric patients at the hospital.

Therapeutic Potential and Future Research

Umbilical cord blood is a rich source of stem cells, which are used in clinical treatments for a variety of blood, immune, and genetic disorders. Ongoing research also explores the potential applications of these stem cells in regenerative medicine, investigating treatments for conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, and type 1 diabetes, according to Gulf Times.

Yannis Angouras stated in the Gulf Times report that the collaboration complements the hospital’s specialized services for women and children. Mohammad al-Mana added that the partnership reflects a shared institutional goal to make advanced healthcare services more accessible while giving expectant parents greater choice and confidence in planning for their families’ long-term health.
