Universal Studios Hollywood is moving to quiet its newest high-speed attraction after neighbors made themselves heard.
Constructing Additional Sound Barriers
The theme park plans to install two additional sound barriers around the outdoor roller coaster, “Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift.” Construction on the new structures is expected to be completed by early next month, according to L.A.
The coaster is currently operating in a “soft open” phase with technical rehearsals underway. Universal has not yet announced an official opening date for the ride.
Neighborhood Noise and Rider Screams
Residents living near the theme park in neighboring Toluca Lake reported that operations did not become noticeably loud until the park started allowing guests to ride. They cited particularly loud noise from riders’ screams.
Recent sound testing met the theme park’s regulatory requirements. Despite this, Universal committed to adding the two new sound barriers to help reduce neighborhood noise levels.
Studio Response and Community Engagement
“We appreciate the community’s input and will continue to engage with our neighbors as the coaster remains in technical rehearsals ahead of its opening,” Universal Studios Hollywood said in a statement provided to the Los Angeles Times.
Limits of Local Authority
Because the theme park sits outside city limits, the L.A. City Council lacks direct authority over its operations, according to Nazarian’s office. Even so, Nazarian has actively advocated for residents in the surrounding community during the ongoing sound testing phase.
