Mother Pleads Guilty to Infanticide of Baby Son and Attempted Murder of Daughter

A woman whose original convictions for murdering her baby son and attempting to murder his toddler sister were quashed has pleaded guilty to infanticide and attempted murder at Belfast Crown Court, according to BBC News.

The defendant, whose identity is protected by an anonymity order reported by BBC News, entered her guilty pleas on Thursday. She admitted to the infanticide of her eight-week-old son and the attempted murder of his sister, who was a toddler at the time of the attacks in July 2021. Following the incident, both children were transported to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. While the girl survived after receiving successful medical treatment, the baby boy was pronounced dead at the hospital, as detailed by BBC News.

Mr Justice Stephen Fowler noted during Thursday’s hearing at Belfast Crown Court that the case carries a “complex history” but added that there is “fulsome material available to the court,” according to BBC News reporting. The judge stated an intention to handle the proceedings efficiently before adjourning the matter until late August, when the defendant is scheduled to be sentenced.

Legal History and Appeal Court Ruling

The guilty pleas follow a series of legal developments that began after a 2023 trial, where the woman was originally convicted of murder and attempted murder, according to BBC News. Those initial convictions were successfully challenged. In December 2025, senior judges in the Court of Appeal determined that the original convictions were unsafe. Subsequently, in March of this year, the appellate court ordered a retrial, paving the way for Thursday’s pleas.

Under legal definitions cited by BBC News, infanticide applies specifically to the unlawful killing of a child under the age of 12 months by its biological mother, provided that the “balance of the mother’s mind was disturbed” at the time of the offense.
