The Bridgewater, Massachusetts team capitalized on stellar pitching and defensive execution to shut out their opponents for the second time in the tournament. Massachusetts previously defeated Maine 7-0 early in the regional bracket, forcing Maine through an elimination path to reach the rematch. According to USA Today, Mombeleur was removed in the top of the sixth inning after commanding the strike zone, while his defense secured the final outs with a force out at second, a force out at first, and a fly ball caught in left field thrown cleanly to first base.
“It’s a dream. I never imagined I’d be in this spot,” Mombeleur said on the ESPN broadcast after the game, as captured by USA Today.

Maine struggled defensively throughout the contest, committing three errors that compounded their difficulties against Mombeleur’s pitching.
