A network of Instagram profiles is glamourising irregular migration to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta with misleading videos and profiting from prospective travelers through paid advice, according to an investigation by the BBC’s Top Comment podcast and reporting by The English Chronicle. Following an influx of tens of thousands of arrivals in late July, investigators found faceless social media accounts spamming algorithms with content portraying the border crossing as safe and routine.

Misleading Instagram Content Creates a Digital Mirage of Ceuta

The investigation examined numerous Instagram profiles using variations of terms associated with irregular migration and Ceuta, according to The English Chronicle. These accounts frequently presented arrivals as successful, routine events by posting videos of people in the water and individuals appearing to celebrate after reaching the Spanish autonomous city on the North African coast. According to The English Chronicle, this content intentionally omits contextual information about the severe dangers involved, creating what investigators describe as a digital mirage that conceals the physical risks of the crossing.

Independent reporting cited by The English Chronicle indicates that social media rumors and videos contributed to a snowball effect during the late July influx. While millions of posts appeared across multiple platforms following misinformation regarding a Spanish Supreme Court ruling, according to the BBC, investigators found no conclusive evidence of a single coordinated campaign driving the physical movement.

Faceless Creators Monetize Migration Advice Online

The BBC’s Top Comment podcast uncovered a direct link between faceless creators and individuals profiting from the movement of people, revealing an integrated business operation running on Instagram. When investigators used a fictional online identity to contact several accounts, one operator claimed to have helped others and offered information in exchange for payment, as reported by The English Chronicle. This commercialization of migration advice exposes vulnerable people considering dangerous journeys to intermediaries attempting to profit from their hopes of entering Europe.

While the investigation did not establish that every account involved was directly engaged in organized smuggling or connected to a criminal network, the findings highlight how social media enables individuals to build credibility through selected success stories and directly target prospective migrants.

Meta Response and Ongoing Platform Monitoring

In response to the findings, Instagram parent company Meta stated that it is actively monitoring developments around Ceuta. According to the BBC, Meta stated that a specialized team is monitoring the situation in real time and removing content that violates company policies, including material that offers to provide, facilitate, or seek human smuggling services.
