Liam Lawson secured an 11th-place start for the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix sprint race at Circuit Zandvoort, stepping in to drive for Oracle Red Bull Racing as cover for the injured Isack Hadjar, according to 1News and Fervogear. Returning to the cockpit on short notice after finding out about the drive earlier in the week, the New Zealander completed just a single practice session to adapt to the new car before jumping straight into competitive action.
Sprint Qualifying Performance and Early Pace
Lawson showed immediate speed during the opening phase of sprint qualifying on Friday, August 20, 2026, outpacing his temporary teammate Max Verstappen in SQ1, according to reporting from 1News and Fervogear. However, he failed to advance into the final top-10 segment, ultimately stalling out in SQ2. Lawson noted that while the car felt strong initially, the team failed to make the same performance step that competitors achieved as track grip evolved. He qualified between rookie teammate Arvid Lindblad in 10th and Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda in 12th.
According to 1News, Lawson described the outing as an interesting day filled with a lot of learning. “Normally, you sort of improve through Quali, and we started SQ1 quite strong, then we didn’t make the same step that everybody else did. We’ll look into it,” Lawson stated. He expressed frustration at missing out on the final shootout, adding that the car clearly held the potential to run much higher up the timing sheets.
Russell Claims Pole Position at Zandvoort
At the front of the grid, Mercedes driver George Russell secured pole position for the sprint race, edging out McLaren driver Lando Norris by just 0.041 seconds, according to AP reporting published by 1News. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claimed third, finishing 0.014 seconds behind Norris. Russell joked over his team radio after taking the top spot that he felt lighter on track following his recent engagement announcement to partner Carmen Montero Mundt. Meanwhile, Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli battled floor damage after a bumpy excursion across a gravel trap, managing fifth place, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton qualified seventh.

Team Adjustments and Upcoming Race Strategy
Lawson’s temporary promotion to Red Bull returned Yuki Tsunoda to the Racing Bulls lineup alongside newcomer Arvid Lindblad. Because Lawson has not raced under the 2026 technical regulations prior to this weekend, his primary objective during the sprint event is gathering telemetry on balance trends and tire behavior. Fervogear notes that Red Bull aims to fix setup issues to convert Friday’s raw speed into points during Saturday’s sprint and Sunday’s main Grand Prix.
