Christopher Nolan’s feature film The Odyssey has surpassed 2 million admissions in South Korea just six days after its release, according to data from the integrated ticket computer network. Driven by full IMAX 70mm screenings and widespread word-of-mouth praise, the film has drawn massive crowds to special-format auditoriums like the CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall IMAX, where tickets remain difficult to secure.

Ludwig Göransson Revives Bronze Age Instruments

While special-format screenings have driven intense demand, director Christopher Nolan stated that the film’s visual and sonic design offers a strong experience in standard theaters as well. A major driver of audience immersion is the nearly three-hour original score composed by Ludwig Göransson, marking his third collaboration with Nolan following Tenet and Oppenheimer.

Nolan sought a completely original score that avoided traditional large-scale orchestral arrangements, desiring a sound that felt immediate to contemporary audiences despite the Bronze Age setting. To achieve this, Göransson consulted historical documents and physically restored and played ancient Greek instruments including the aulos and the lyre. He also incorporated bronze gong strikes and synthesizers to build a stark, textured soundscape.

Travis Scott and James Blake Bridge Ancient Myth and Modern Rap

The film’s credits feature the original song “When I’m Home,” a collaboration between rapper Travis Scott, vocalist James Blake, Göransson, and Nolan himself, who shares a co-writing credit. The track aims to bridge classical mythology with contemporary emotional resonance, reflecting the psychological weight of Odysseus’s journey and homecoming.

Nolan noted that Homer’s original epic was originally an oral tradition passed down by traveling bards, prompting him to view Travis Scott’s role as a modern equivalent to an ancient storyteller. Scott, Blake, and Göransson developed the track after reviewing an early cut of the film in March, blending rap verses, haunting vocal refrains, and dynamic rhythmic structures.

Box Office Revival Meets Isolated Screening Disruptions

The strong performance of The Odyssey alongside competing releases has helped revitalize local box-office traffic following an extended downturn. However, the commercial success has occasionally faced operational friction; local reporting highlighted an incident at an Incheon cinema where disruptions by a Chinese audience member required police intervention and temporary screening suspensions.

Göransson’s work on the film adds to a decorated career that includes Academy Awards for Black Panther, Oppenheimer, and Sinner. His score for The Odyssey has drawn particular notice from audiences for specific acoustic details, such as the distinct plucked sound of the lyre mirroring Odysseus drawing his bow.
