Fake Facebook Profile Linked to Car Scam Investigation in San Juan

A Facebook profile operating under the name “Sergio S Sánchez” used San Juan buy-and-sell groups to advertise vehicles and commercial proposals over several months, before hidden URL data linked the account to Matías Arce, a man named in a judicial complaint involving a disputed Toyota Corolla sale, according to reporting by Telesoldiario.

Vehicle Listings and AI-Generated Images

The account restricted public access, but historical listings remain visible across regional Facebook marketplace groups. According to Telesoldiario, activity tracked from the account includes a Chevrolet gris posted on January 9 of this year, alongside earlier entries from November of the previous year offering a Fiat 147 and seeking a Volkswagen Bora. The volume of listings increased between July and August, featuring a Volkswagen Amarok V6, a Volkswagen Vento, a Fiat Palio Sport, a Ford Focus, and a Peugeot 207.

Listings frequently utilized standard promotional phrases such as “listo para transferir” (ready to transfer), “excelente precio” (excellent price), and “nada para hacerle” (nothing to fix). Telesoldiario reported that images accompanying the posts raised questions, appearing in some instances to be sourced from the internet or modified using artificial intelligence tools, while other listings omitted vehicle license plates entirely. Beyond automobiles, the profile advertised a land parcel in Santa Lucía measuring approximately 800 square meters within a private neighborhood, featuring an initial payment requirement of $12 million and direct financing, though no exact address was provided.

The Link to Matías Arce and the Judicial Complaint

The connection between the pseudonym and the ongoing investigation emerged from the account’s web address structure. According to Telesoldiario, while the profile displayed the name Sergio S Sánchez publicly, the underlying URL contained the name Matías Arce. This detail aligns with a formal complaint filed by Gonzalo Parada regarding the sale of his 2008 Toyota Corolla XEI.

Parada stated to Telesoldiario that he initiated contact via Messenger on June 1 after the profile expressed interest in his vehicle listed on Marketplace. A contact later introduced José Gabriel Romero to the transaction. Parada reported handing over the car under a payment agreement totaling $11.5 million, noting he received $3 million upfront and a promissory note for the remaining balance, which was never paid. The vehicle was subsequently transferred and sold to third parties.

Following public reporting of the case, Parada told Telesoldiario that more than ten individuals contacted him to report similar experiences involving vehicles, problematic documentation, bounced checks, and unfulfilled loans. Judicial investigators will determine the facts surrounding each transaction.
