Launched initially as an archive for national video materials, the platform is accessible through North Korea’s national data network using computers, tablet PCs, and smartphones, with mobile devices accounting for the largest user base, according to state media. By December 2020, the platform had accumulated millions of registered users nationwide. Major technical overhauls, including a version 2.0 update announced in February 2023, enabled the delivery of high-definition streaming for thousands of historical feature films, television literary productions, and scientific films spanning several decades.

New Features and Talent Recruitment

Recent updates to “Lifestyle’s Friend” have transformed the service from a passive viewing repository into an interactive portal. According to the Rodong Sinmun report, the platform now features dedicated sections detailing the history of domestic cinema development. These sections profile prominent figures in North Korean film history, including screenwriters and directors such as Paek In-jun, Ri Chun-gu, and O Mi-ran.

Furthermore, the service has integrated two distinct engagement mechanisms:

  • Movie Actor Selection: A dedicated portal allowing aspiring actors to submit application materials and audition data based on standardized casting criteria set by producers.
  • Film Literature Mass Contest: A submission portal enabling writers to pitch creative screenplays and literary works directly through the platform in accordance with organizational guidelines.

Technical Evolution and Accessibility

The platform opens with an animated graphic depicting a camera and film reel alongside the “Lifestyle’s Friend” trademark, designed to showcase promotional clips for newly released films, television dramas, and edited programs.

When the platform’s 2.0 framework was detailed in February 2023, state media emphasized that upgrades were engineered to rescue aging, decades-old analog media assets and convert them into high-definition formats suitable for modern smartphone screens.
