The project marks Cohen’s feature directorial debut, bringing back the defining British comedy character more than two decades after his first feature film.

The film was developed over several years in close collaboration with Cohen and production company ZQ Entertainment, utilizing a secretive production approach similar to the comedian’s previous Borat films.
Czech filmmaker Petr Jákl serves as an executive producer on the project, marking a major international milestone for his career. According to Jákl, production took place secretly across the UK and the US, with much of the work completed out of the public eye. Unlike many recent comedy releases that head straight to streaming services, Amazon MGM Studios is positioning Ali G: Who Iz I? as a theatrical release.

Morgana Robinson reprises her role as Ali’s long-term girlfriend, Julie—the central subject of the 2002 Ali G and Shaggy musical collaboration “Me Julie.” The trailer features a comedic plotline where Julie becomes pregnant, though the hapless character mistakenly believes her pregnancy test is a vape. Facing the prospect of an extra mouth to feed, Ali leaves his routine behind and travels to America, where he encounters new adversaries that threaten his safety.

Ali G first emerged on British television in 1998 on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show before landing his own program, Da Ali G Show. Through deadpan interviews with politicians, academics, and public figures who were often unaware they were participating in a comedy bit, the character achieved massive cultural popularity. That success paved the way for the 2002 feature film Ali G Indahouse, directed by Mark Mylod, which developed an international cult following.
The new film highlights Cohen’s transition behind the camera.
