SpaceX plans to build a $100 billion launch facility and spaceport in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, on a former Exxon property, according to a joint statement released by the Louisiana Economic Development office on Tuesday. The project aims to support thousands of annual Starship flights to Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars, serving as the company’s largest launch site to date.
Starbase Louisiana Scope and Timeline
Construction on the 125,000-acre site, officially named Starbase, Louisiana, is scheduled to begin next year. SpaceX stated that it aims to launch its first Starship flight from the new location in 2029. The facility will expand the aerospace company’s operations beyond its current headquarters in Texas and locations in Florida. According to the Louisiana Economic Development agency, the project will add more than 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, with average wages projected to be 192% higher than the region’s current average salary, alongside an estimated 8,100 indirect jobs.
Economic and Environmental Framework
The Louisiana Economic Development agency stated that the historic project will establish the state as a global hub for next-generation aerospace. In tandem with the infrastructure development, SpaceX announced plans to partner with the state on a historic coastal restoration initiative to bring back marshland and provide storm protection around the facility. Earlier this year, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed legislation exempting certain aerospace projects from public review, classifying unauthorized entry into a spaceport as a felony, and providing financial incentives for aerospace manufacturers.
Strategic Context and Prior Operations
The Louisiana project follows environmental challenges and regulatory scrutiny at SpaceX’s initial Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. According to Texas state agency notices, SpaceX faced fines and violations related to Clean Water Act compliance concerning its water deluge system, as well as concrete debris dispersion during early test flights in Cameron County. Elon Musk’s broader regional expansion includes the development of Colossus data centers and power infrastructure in Greater Memphis, the relocation of Tesla’s headquarters to Austin, Texas, and planned manufacturing facilities across the Southern United States.
