Hyundai Motor Company plans to launch its first extended-range electric vehicle, the Santa Fe EREV, in the first quarter of 2027, according to an announcement made at the 2026 CEO Investor Day. The upcoming midsize SUV uses a series hybrid setup where an internal combustion engine charges the onboard battery, while electric motors drive the wheels.
## Production Plans at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama
Production for the Santa Fe EREV is slated for Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA), according to company disclosures. To support the rollout, Hyundai aims to expand its local parts procurement ratio to over 80% and increase its supplier network to 275 companies.
The strategy includes raising North American production volume by 50% through 2030 to capture a larger share of the regional market. Achieving these metrics would push the localized content of the Santa Fe vehicle to 61%.
## Powertrain Specifications and Efficiency
The Santa Fe EREV relies on a dual-motor configuration providing an all-wheel-drive system. Hyundai stated that the vehicle will feature an in-house-developed battery pack with roughly half the capacity of a standard battery electric vehicle.
This smaller battery footprint reduces vehicle weight to preserve energy efficiency and lower production costs. According to Hyundai, the combined driving range on a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery reaches approximately 965 kilometers, or about 600 miles.
## Expansion of EREV and Hybrid Lineups
Hyundai intends to apply the EREV powertrain to models under its premium brand, Genesis, starting around the time the Santa Fe EREV hits the market. The Genesis variant, which may be the GV70 midsize SUV, will achieve an estimated driving range of roughly 1,029 kilometers, or 640 miles, according to company projections.
In the broader North American market, Hyundai targets the release of more than 10 hybrid models by 2030, aiming for hybrids to account for 50% of its regional sales. Production capacity across its U.S. facilities, including HMMA and Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), is scheduled to scale up to 500,000 units. Hyundai also plans to introduce EREV models to the Chinese market.
