The sudden disaster washed away dozens of homes, vehicles, and critical infrastructure, triggering intense rescue efforts complicated by heavy mud and blocked mountain roads.

At approximately 8:40 am local time on Wednesday, a massive wall of water, mud, and rocks surged through the Lhende Khola river valley, engulfing settlements along the border. According to Nepalese police and rescue officials, the floodwaters destroyed at least 19 bridges and washed away roughly 40 kilometers (25 miles) of roads. In Nepal’s Rasuwa district, settlements such as Timure and Syapru Besi sustained heavy damage. Professor Liz Stephens, a climate risks and resilience expert at the University of Reading, explained that high-mountain events frequently involve a “complex chain of hazards” rather than simple rainfall. In this case, the falling ice and rock avalanche struck the Lhende River in Tibet about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of the border crossing, creating a temporary natural dam. When that blockage burst, it released a destructive surge downstream. Initial reports suggested a 4.4-magnitude earthquake triggered the slide, but the United States Geological Survey (USGS) later revised its assessment, clarifying that the seismic signal was actually generated by the landslide itself, which ultimately registered as a magnitude 5.2 event.

Search and rescue operations face severe constraints due to high river levels, damaged infrastructure, and thick layers of mud. Nepalese authorities confirmed that at least 360 bodies have been recovered by police forces utilizing helicopters, drones, and search dogs. A study published in Frontiers in Climate warned that warming trends intensify climate-related hazards, increasing the frequency of glacial lake outburst floods and ice avalanches.
