Phocaean Sailors and the Birth of Massalia

This ancient settlement gave the modern French metropolis its enduring nickname, the “cité phocéenne,” linking contemporary culture directly to its Mediterranean roots.

Fleeing Persian Invasions to Claim the Lacydon

According to News of Marseille, the Phocéens were skilled navigators and merchants from an ancient Greek city located in what is now western Turkey. Fleeing Persian invasions led by Cyrus the Great, these maritime explorers traveled westward across the Mediterranean to establish a new commercial colony. They selected a site featuring a natural calanque—known as the Lacydon and recognized today as the Vieux-Port—which provided a safe harbor for their ships and a strategic hub for regional trade.

The Royal Banquet of Gyptis and Protis

The founding of Marseille is traditionally associated with a romantic myth recorded in regional lore, such as Le Guide secret de la Provence by Delphine Rusquart. According to this legend, when the Greek ships arrived, their leader Protis was invited to a banquet hosted by Nann, king of the local Segobriges tribe. During the celebration, the king’s daughter, Gyptis, was expected to choose her husband by offering a cup of wine to her preferred suitor.

A Founding Myth Forged in Peace

By custom, Gyptis surveyed the gathered contenders before walking toward Protis and handing him the cup. The choice sealed an alliance between the two groups. In recognition of the marriage, King Nann granted the Greeks territory along the shores of the Lacydon to build their city. Historians note that while the event functions primarily as a foundational myth, it symbolizes an early peaceful mingling of Greek and Celtic populations.

Unearthing the Cité Phocéenne Today

The historical and cultural footprint of the ancient settlers remains visible throughout the region. As outlined by News of Marseille, the introduction of viticulture and olive cultivation reshaped the local economy and landscape. Archaeological investigations at sites such as the Jardin des Vestiges and the Marseille History Museum continue to unearth artifacts from the Greek era, preserving a shared heritage that defines the second-largest city in France.
