Unlicensed Driver Charged With Manslaughter After Killing Baby in NJ Parking Lot

A nine-month-old baby boy died and two family members sustained injuries after an unlicensed driver struck a mother pushing a stroller through a Jackson Township grocery store parking lot on Friday, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Incident Details in Jackson Township Parking Lot

The collision occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. in the parking lot of the NPGS kosher grocery store located on West County Line Road in Jackson Township, New Jersey, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer. Emergency responders rushed the mother and both children to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where medical staff pronounced the infant dead. The mother and the five-year-old girl remained hospitalized in stable condition following the crash, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Criminal Charges Filed Against Two Drivers

Law enforcement authorities took into custody two women in connection with the fatal collision and transported both individuals to the Ocean County Jail, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Maria CobonGuzman faces multiple felony charges, including manslaughter, operating a motor vehicle without ever having possessed or been issued a valid driver’s license while involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash, and two counts of assault by auto, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. A further investigation by local police revealed that CobonGuzman never held a valid driver’s license in New Jersey or any other state. Authorities also took into custody Ariadna Lazaro-Flores, 22, of Toms River, charging her with knowingly engaging in conduct creating a substantial risk of death to another. The incident remains under investigation.
