New research published in the European Journal of Nutrition on July 16 reveals that high coffee consumption correlates directly with lower total and visceral fat mass, greater skeletal muscle mass, and more favorable metabolic markers. According to the study, which analyzed health data from 2,264 participants aged 46 from the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort, high coffee intake is also linked to lower levels of branched-chain amino acids, which serve as biomarkers for type 2 diabetes risk.

Body Composition and Muscle Mass Findings

Researchers examining the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort found distinct physical differences among participants who drank large amounts of coffee. According to the study data, volunteers who consumed higher quantities of coffee maintained lower total and visceral fat mass than low consumers, even when sharing an identical body mass index (BMI). Furthermore, heavy coffee drinkers exhibited greater skeletal muscle mass compared to participants with lower consumption levels.

The investigation evaluated lifestyle factors including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diet, and education alongside clinical health metrics such as BMI, fat and muscle mass, and hormone levels. The observed link between increased coffee intake and favorable body composition remained consistent even after researchers adjusted for BMI and lifestyle variables.

Metabolic Markers and Sex Hormone Differences

The study identified lower concentrations of branched-chain amino acids—biomarkers linked to insulin resistance and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes—among regular coffee consumers. These metabolic associations appeared more pronounced in men than in women, according to the published findings.

Lead author Luca Verroest noted that the cohort displayed a distinct hormonal signature that persisted independently of BMI and lifestyle habits. Male participants who drank more coffee showed a more favorable glycemic-insulin profile, elevated concentrations of total and biodisponible testosterone, and increased levels of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG). At the same time, free testosterone levels and the free androgen index were slightly lower in these men.

In female participants, hormonal associations were more limited. According to the study authors, coffee consumption in women correlated primarily with higher SHBG levels and lower free androgen rates.

Broader Health Context and Expert Insights

While millions of people consume coffee daily, researchers emphasize that its exact pathways connecting to human metabolism and hormones remain thoroughly under-investigated. According to the study team, these new findings help explain the biological relationship between coffee intake and cardiometabolic health, establishing a foundation for future clinical research into the specific compounds responsible for these metabolic shifts.

The current Finnish study specifically advances scientific understanding of how moderate to high coffee habits interact with endocrine profiles and body composition across different sexes.
