Trump-Promoted Freedom Fuel Accused of Selling Stolen Gas in Lawsuit

Mansfield Oil Co. filed a federal lawsuit on August 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, accusing fuel distributor KRSM Inc. and its operator, Syed Kazmi, of taking more than 1 million gallons of Sunoco fuel worth nearly $4 million without paying for it, according to court documents cited by Politico and NBC10 Philadelphia. The Georgia-based supplier alleged that the stolen inventory was subsequently sold to stations operating under the Freedom Fuel Network.

Lawsuit Details Alleged Fuel Theft and Unpaid Invoices

According to the complaint filed by Mansfield Oil Co., KRSM Inc. lifted approximately 1 million gallons of fuel from a Sunoco terminal located in Twin Oaks, Pennsylvania, without settling the associated financial obligations. Mansfield attorney Urs Broderick Furrer stated to Politico that the unpaid inventory was delivered directly to at least 10 stations within the Freedom Fuel Network. “KRSM has failed to pay for fuel that they lifted off of Mansfield’s account. That is not an accounting dispute,” Furrer told the outlet.

KRSM Inc. and Syed Kazmi defended against the action by characterizing the matter as a bookkeeping discrepancy. In comments reported by Politico, representatives for KRSM called the litigation “an accounting dispute over fuel invoices misplaced by Mansfield Oil” and declined further public statements due to the ongoing federal litigation.

Political Spotlight on Freedom Fuel Low Prices

The legal dispute thrusts the Freedom Fuel Network back into public view following intense media attention ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. President Donald Trump publicly lauded the brand on Truth Social on July 1, praising the network for offering petroleum well below prevailing market rates. “They are doing this because they love the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote on the platform.

The White House subsequently released a video on YouTube showing motorists expressing gratitude to Trump while purchasing fuel at $3.47 per gallon at a Freedom Fuel location—a price point intentionally established to mark Trump as the 47th president. At the time, administration officials characterized Freedom Fuel as an independent enterprise willing to operate on reduced profit margins to lower costs for consumers. Business records connect several Freedom Fuel locations to Shamikh Kazmi, the brother of Syed Kazmi, while Freedom Fuel maintains that it currently operates 29 stations.

Corporate Connections and Prior Litigation History

Court records indicate that business entities associated with the Kazmi family have faced similar commercial disputes in the past. According to Politico, 7-Eleven secured a court victory against KRSM in 2024 after accusing the firm of taking tens of thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes. Additionally, a federal judge ruled earlier in the year in favor of a separate fuel distributor that alleged a company operated by Shamikh Kazmi took approximately $667,000 in fuel without rendering full payment.
