How Chiara Consonni Claimed Victory in Philadelphia

The race came down to a bunch sprint following tactical riding on the final circuits. According to Cyclingnews, Consonni stayed patient while EF Education-Oatly and her own Canyon-SRAM squad worked to control numerous attacks across the hilly course. In the final 200 metres, Consonni capitalized on a lead-out from her teammates to secure her first professional victory on United States soil.

“You know, it was a really long travel, and it’s not easy with the jet lag to arrive here and do a race like this,” Consonni told Cyclingnews. Reflecting on the team’s execution, she noted that her teammates performed exceptionally well during the final laps to position her for the win.

Podium Finishes and Race Dynamics

Alexandra Volstad of EF Education-Oatly finished a close second, coming within a tyre’s width of her first professional win. Volstad expressed satisfaction with the result, noting that her young team has steadily collected podium finishes throughout the season as they learn to race together.

The 116-rider peloton faced immediate drama when a crash at the back during the opening kilometres forced a neutral period along Kelly Drive to allow delayed riders to rejoin. Once racing resumed, EF Education-Oatly dictated the early tempo up the iconic Manayunk Wall, a steep short climb that defined the race’s tactical selection.

Breakaway Attempts Shape the Course

Throughout the event’s 23.2-kilometre circuits, several riders attempted to break away from the main group. Mairen Lawson of Aegis and Farah-Dale Morris of Automatic Racing established an early 20-second gap before being reeled in on the Manayunk Wall. A more substantial breakaway formed on the third lap, featuring Elisa Valtulini of Vini-Fantini-BePink, Haixin Dong of XDS China, Rachel Galler of 1K Flips-FTP Racing Jakroo, local rider Kim Stoveld of Automatic Racing, Marlen Lawson, Galen Bolard of Competitive Edge, and Rebecca Lang of Winston Salem-Flow.

This group built a 40-second advantage, with Bolard claiming maximum mountains points on Lemon Hill. However, as the race entered its closing phase, EF Education-Oatly applied sustained pressure at the base of the Manayunk Wall, dissolving the breakaway and forming a lead group of five riders that included Kristen Faulkner, Babette van der Wolf, Agnieszka Skalniak-Sojka, Consonni, and 2016 race winner Megan Guarnier of CCB Kenetik p/b Levine Law Group, setting the stage for Consonni’s winning sprint.
