Tropical Storm Lowell is tracking westward across the Pacific Ocean and is forecast to pass south of the Hawaiian Islands as a strong hurricane later this week, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center. Forecasters report that the system is currently maintaining steady intensity while moving toward the region.
Tropical Storm Lowell Tracking Toward Hawaii
The system was moving toward the west at 12 mph. Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecasters expect Lowell to maintain a general westward motion for the next two to three days before gradually turning toward the west-northwest later in the week.
The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency noted in an X post that Lowell does not present any immediate threat to the islands. Tropical-storm-force winds currently extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.
Hurricane Karina Trails Further West
Trailing thousands of miles behind in the eastern Pacific, Hurricane Karina is intensifying rapidly as a major storm system. According to National Hurricane Center data from Miami, Karina was located about 985 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
Karina strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, packing maximum sustained winds of 125 mph with higher gusts. The system was moving toward the west near 9 mph. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach up to 12 miles out. Forecasters expect Karina to turn toward the west-northwest between Monday night and Tuesday while continuing to remain far away from landmasses.
Pacific Storm Metrics and Comparison
While both systems are tracking across the Pacific basin, they differ significantly in intensity and structure as of the latest evening updates.

| Storm Name | Classification | Maximum Sustained Winds | Current Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tropical Storm Lowell | Tropical Storm | 50 mph | 900 miles east-southeast of Hilo |
| Hurricane Karina | Category 3 Hurricane | 125 mph | 985 miles west-southwest of Baja California |
Forecasters will continue monitoring both systems as Lowell approaches the Central Pacific region and Karina tracks further west across open waters.
