A software engineer who spent 22 years working inside Samsung Electronics semiconductor and display production lines before dying of myelodysplastic syndrome has been granted industrial accident compensation, according to labor organizations. The Seoul Southern Occupational Disease Determination Committee reversed a previous denial after the bereaved family used information disclosure requests to uncover missing hazard records and flawed reviews.

According to the determination records provided by labor representatives, the worker spent over two decades entering LCD, OLED, and semiconductor production lines to perform software development and setup tasks. Although software engineers do not directly handle chemical reagents on the manufacturing floor, the committee established that workers can still be exposed to carcinogenic agents while stationed inside during line setup phases.

The case initially stalled in September 2025 when the Seoul Southern Occupational Disease Determination Committee rejected the worker’s application for occupational disease recognition. Following that denial, the bereaved family filed formal information disclosure requests with the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service to inspect internal review files and disaster investigation reports. Those public records requests exposed severe omissions regarding hazardous substance exposure inside the specific manufacturing facilities, alongside superficial committee deliberations.

Armed with these documentary corrections, the family petitioned the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service for a re-examination. Upon reviewing the corrected workplace hazard logs, the committee acknowledged that the software engineer’s presence inside active production lines created a substantial causal link to the terminal blood cancer.

Establishing Causal Links Without Official Access Logs

A central challenge in the initial review involved missing physical access logs for the software engineer. Because records were unavailable, employers and initial reviewers argued that time spent inside production lines could not be verified.

According to the materials released by labor advocates, the determination committee ultimately relied on the inherent operational realities of software deployment in advanced manufacturing. The panel accepted that software development and setup require prolonged physical presence directly on the shop floor. By prioritizing the structural demands of software development and setup over missing administrative attendance records, the committee affirmed that substantial causal relationships can be established through occupational context when official logging fails.
