Independent distributor Strand Releasing has secured North American rights to Ulrike Ottinger’s avant-garde feature The Blood Countess, starring French actress Isabelle Huppert. According to festival reports, the acquisition follows the film’s world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it opened the Berlinale Special Gala program.
Theatrical and Digital Release Plans
Strand Releasing plans to bring The Blood Countess to theaters and streaming platforms across North America. According to distribution announcements, the company intends to roll out a limited theatrical run in major markets before moving the title to digital platforms. The distributor is positioning the film to attract both art-house patrons and genre enthusiasts looking for unconventional cinema.
Creative Vision and Historical Subject Matter
Directed by German filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger, the film blends baroque aesthetics with dark humor to retell the legend of Elizabeth Báthory. Báthory was a 16th-century Hungarian noblewoman accused of torturing and killing young women, a figure whose legacy heavily influenced vampire folklore. Ottinger co-wrote the screenplay with Nobel Prize-winning Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek, known for The Piano Teacher.
According to production details, the visual design relies on 17th-century architecture, lavish costumes, and chiaroscuro lighting captured through static compositions and long takes by cinematographer Julius Vörös. In interviews regarding her directorial perspective, Ottinger explained that she approached the historical legend as a satire on power, gender, and how societies construct monsters.
Cast and Festival Circuit
Isabelle Huppert headlines the project as the infamous countess, adding to a career spanning more than six decades that includes acclaimed performances in Elle and The Piano Teacher. Following its Berlinale debut, the film is scheduled for its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, with a midnight screening accompanied by a virtual Q&A session featuring Ottinger and Huppert.
