According to court proceedings in Las Vegas, a jury of 12 people convicted Duane Davis on murder charges after a three-week trial. Appearing in court in a black suit, Davis received the verdict impassively before informing the judge that he intends to appeal the decision, as reported by courtroom observers. His sentencing is scheduled for October 13, where he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The 1996 Shooting and Prosecution Arguments

Shakur was 25 years old when he was shot multiple times on September 7, 1996, while riding in a car in Las Vegas, dying from his injuries six days later. Prosecutors did not accuse Davis of firing the weapon himself. Instead, according to the Clark County District Attorney’s office, the state argued that the former South Side Compton Crips gang leader organized the retaliation scheme, acquired the firearm, and rode in the white Cadillac from which the shots were fired. Under Nevada law, individuals can be prosecuted for murder if they aid and abet a killing.

Defense Strategy and Underlying Conflicts

Defense attorney Michael Sanft contested the prosecution’s narrative, portraying Davis as a liar and boaster who fabricated stories for financial gain. Sanft argued that investigators failed to present a watertight case, noting that the murder weapon was never recovered and physical evidence placing Davis at the immediate scene was absent. The confrontation stemmed from an altercation earlier that evening at a Mike Tyson boxing match, where Shakur and members of his entourage attacked Orlando Anderson, Davis’s nephew and a fellow gang member, according to casino video footage and police testimony presented during the trial.
