Venezuelan military leadership endorsed a major energy pact with the United States on Tuesday, an agreement that grants American operators control over 17 domestic oil fields.
Defense Minister General Gustavo Gonzalez Lopez announced the military’s backing during a televised address following a strategic meeting with interim President Delcy Rodríguez. “We accompany, approve and agree with all the terms of the recent strategic pact that the country concluded with the United States concerning energy development in the oil fields,” Gonzalez Lopez stated, as reported by AFP.
Strategic Terms and Production Projections
The energy accord, initially unveiled as historic by United States President Donald Trump on Friday and subsequently confirmed by interim President Rodríguez, unlocks access to 17 Venezuelan oil fields.
Caracas projects the 25-year arrangement will yield approximately 209 billion dollars in national revenue. To advance the implementation of the accord, United States Energy Secretary Chris Wright is scheduled to arrive in Venezuela on Tuesday evening ahead of a formal signing expected on Wednesday.
Legislative Backing and Economic Expectations
The country’s National Assembly, which remains under government control, voted to formally support the energy agreement during a Tuesday afternoon session. Defense Minister Gonzalez Lopez emphasized that the partnership relies on economic cooperation rather than political subordination.
“We are going to see an influx of many international investments, which will translate into more jobs, greater production, and all this trickle-down effect will generate even more jobs,” Gonzalez Lopez told viewers during his broadcasted remarks. “If you asked me to define this agreement in a single word, I would say it is prosperity and well-being for the country, as well as for us.”
