The United States military launched a new series of large-scale strikes against Iranian military targets on Tuesday, abruptly escalating an intermittent conflict that has persisted for more than six months, according to U.S. Central Command. The latest barrage targeted air defense sites, radar systems, and maritime assets, following initial strikes on Sunday that ended a month-long lull in military action.
U.S. Central Command Details Strikes on Iranian Infrastructure
U.S. Central Command stated that the latest operation targeted critical military infrastructure inside Iran, including radar systems and maritime assets, after forces attempted to attack commercial ships and American personnel in the Middle East. “They tried to rebuild their radar because they can’t see anything,” Trump said, adding, “We waited until it was almost built and then we hit it.”
President Trump issued a stark warning on social media regarding potential retaliation, writing, “If the failed Nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level, but it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings.”
Regional Retaliation and Civilian Casualties
Following the commencement of U.S. strikes, Tehran responded by launching ballistic missiles and drones at various sites across the region. According to Iranian state television, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard targeted a U.S. base along Jordan’s Gulf of Aqaba coast. Jordan’s military reported that its air defenses successfully intercepted 10 missiles, while three landed in unpopulated areas.
The renewed hostilities also resulted in civilian casualties in southern Iran. Ahmad Nafisi, Hormozgan Province’s deputy governor, stated on Iranian state television that a U.S. strike hit a home hosting a wedding ceremony in Kuhestak, killing five people—including a child—and wounding at least 68 others. Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, condemned the action on X, writing, “Make no mistake: these crimes will not go unpunished.”
Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, acknowledged reports of civilian casualties but noted that they “originated from Iranian state media.” Hawkins maintained that “the U.S. military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC.”
Impact on the Strait of Hormuz and Regional Security
The conflict has tightened Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which 20 percent of the world’s oil normally flows. Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff and its joint military command issued a joint statement warning that the armed forces would deliver crushing blows against the United States. State-run IRNA news agency reported that paramilitary Revolutionary Guard officials claimed the attacks have only strengthened the Islamic Republic’s resolve.
Additional defensive actions were reported across the Persian Gulf. The Kuwaiti Army announced on X that its air defenses intercepted drone attacks following the renewed hostilities, while Iranian officials claimed a separate drone attack targeted U.S. forces in Bahrain, though regional authorities have not immediately confirmed that strike.
