Actor George Clooney defended Mark Ruffalo’s right to free speech during a September 2, 2026, press conference at the Venice Film Festival, describing ongoing drama surrounding the actor as “ridiculous.” Clooney addressed the controversy following Ruffalo’s vocal opposition to a proposed $111 billion corporate acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance, while also voicing his own concerns about media consolidation and potential job losses in the entertainment industry.

George Clooney Defends Mark Ruffalo’s Free Speech in Venice

During a conference at the Venice Film Festival where he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, George Clooney, 65, weighed in on the fierce backlash Mark Ruffalo faced for criticizing corporate leadership. Clooney told reporters that he supports Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely.

“I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely,” Clooney said during the September 2 appearance. Calling the situation “ridiculous,” Clooney added, “We’re not going to ban speech. I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it. That’s important. In fact, it’s part of how democracy works.”

The controversy began after Ruffalo, 58, publicly opposed the Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal announced in February. Ruffalo drew specific attention to Paramount Skydance chairman David Ellison—whose father, Larry Ellison, is the co-founder of Oracle and a prominent President Donald Trump ally—and criticized Oracle’s technology ties to the Israeli government following the October 2023 terror attacks.

Corporate Backlash and Antisemitism Allegations

In August, Paramount Skydance responded to Ruffalo’s commentary by issuing a statement alleging that the actor invoked antisemitic tropes. A Paramount spokesperson stated that using words like “genocide” and “apartheid” in a corporate dispute was “a bridge too far” and cheapened real human suffering.

Ruffalo strongly rejected the allegation via X, writing that the accusation was “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.” He maintained that his criticism targeted political actions, military technology contracts, and corporate executives rather than Jewish people. More than 170 Jewish artists, academics, and public figures subsequently signed an open letter defending Ruffalo and rejecting the antisemitism claims. Ruffalo has also received public backing from peers including Jane Fonda and John Cusack.

Industry Concerns Over the Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger

Beyond defending Ruffalo’s right to dissent, Clooney addressed the underlying financial and operational validity of the Paramount-Warner Bros. transaction. While acknowledging that media mergers are complex, Clooney questioned the ultimate economic logic of the deal.

“I don’t see how the merger financially ends up making sense for the people who are trying to do it,” Clooney said. “I always worry whenever big companies are consolidating because it means a lot of people are going to lose their jobs.”

The proposed acquisition has triggered widespread debate across Hollywood regarding media ownership and the future stability of industry jobs. During his time in Venice, Clooney also warned reporters about the broader societal implications of artificial intelligence, deepfake technology, and the growing influence of wealthy individuals over major media organisations.
