Three people died and at least six others sustained injuries, including three police officers, during a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis high-rise apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, according to local authorities and the Minneapolis Police Department.
Afternoon Gunfire Shatters Loring Tower
The incident unfolded at approximately 4:36 p.m. on Wednesday at the Loring Tower apartment building located at 15 East Grant Street, according to an initial statement from the Minneapolis Police Department. Responding officers arrived at the high-rise and encountered multiple victims while hearing active gunfire coming from upper floors.
Officers Strike Upper-Floor Gunfire
As officers moved toward the source of the gunfire on an upper level, limited visibility from haze hindered their progress, according to Minneapolis police. During the encounter, three police officers sustained injuries.
A city hall source told KSTP that one officer was shot in the stomach and underwent surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), where they were listed in stable condition as of 6:45 p.m. A second officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, and a third officer was evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police reports.
Suspect Dies By Suicide Following Eviction
Three individuals died in the incident, including the suspected shooter. According to law enforcement sources cited by KSTP, the suspect died by suicide.
A source told KSTP that Minneapolis officers had been called to the same apartment earlier on Wednesday for a disturbance involving the suspect, who had been evicted from the building that day.
Hennepin Healthcare Receives Seven Patients
Authorities confirmed that one shooting victim was pronounced dead at the apartment building, and another died after being transported to the hospital, according to the Minneapolis Police Department and FOX 9. Hennepin Healthcare officials stated that the hospital received seven patients connected to the downtown shooting, confirming one fatality upon arrival.
Massive Law Enforcement Response Paralyzes Downtown
Emergency responders, Minneapolis police, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office personnel, ATF agents, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) flooded the downtown area following the initial reports. Law enforcement cordoned off a perimeter stretching from 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and from Hennepin Avenue to Third Avenue South, asking the public to avoid the area.
State and local leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, released statements reacting to the violence.
