Medtronic announced a strategic partnership with Cornerstone Robotics on September 1, 2026, featuring an approximately $700 million investment that includes rights to distribute the Hong Kong-based company’s Sentire surgical system in select markets outside the United States, according to corporate announcements. The agreement pairs Cornerstone’s soft-tissue robot with Medtronic’s established Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system to expand global market access.
Investment Scope and Regional Distribution Rights
According to Medtronic, the roughly $700 million capital commitment secures distribution rights for the Sentire surgical system in specific international markets where the platform holds regulatory approval. MedTech Dive reported that these territories include China, Singapore, and Europe. Cornerstone developed the Sentire platform in-house, securing the European CE Mark in May 2026 for use in general surgery, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic procedures. The system is also approved for clinical use in China and Singapore.
Matt Anderson, senior vice president and president of the Surgical operating unit at Medtronic, stated that the company is investing across multiple robotic platforms and digital tools to meet varying regional needs. “Surgeons, health systems and markets have varying needs and preferences, which is why we are investing across robotic platforms, digital tools and platform-enhancing technologies,” Anderson said, according to Medtronic’s official release.
Complementing the Hugo Robotic-Assisted Surgery System
Medtronic intends to position Sentire alongside its flagship Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system. During the company’s earnings call Tuesday, Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha addressed analyst questions regarding whether the multi-hundred-million-dollar stake signaled a lack of confidence in the Hugo platform. Martha rejected that characterization, telling investors, “It’s just the opposite. We’re very excited about the progress that we’re making in Hugo.”
Martha characterized robotic surgery as a primary growth driver for healthcare, noting that global adoption remains in the single digits, while emerging market penetration sits near 1% according to MedTech Dive reporting. Medtronic reported that Hugo procedure growth currently outpaces the broader robotic surgery market by a factor of two. The company projects total global procedures performed with the Hugo system will exceed 50,000 by the end of its fiscal year across 250 installed units spanning 35 countries.
Competitive Landscape in Soft-Tissue Robotics
The partnership expands Medtronic’s footprint in soft-tissue robotic surgery as major medical technology firms vie for market share traditionally dominated by Intuitive and its da Vinci system. Medtronic secured FDA clearance for the Hugo system in urological procedures, marking an entry into the U.S. market. Johnson & Johnson subsequently received FDA authorization for its Ottava robotic surgery system in July 2026, according to MedTech Dive.

To support its existing platform, Medtronic continues to roll out software upgrades, integrated stapling, expanded instrumentation, and AI-driven decision-making tools within its Touch Surgery ecosystem. The addition of Cornerstone’s multi-port Sentire system—equipped with an immersive console and dual-console capability—provides health systems with an alternative configuration designed for diverse clinical environments and economic models.
