England centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg has disputed Rassie Erasmus’ assertion that the two held discussions regarding a potential international call-up for South Africa, stating he was entirely unaware of any interest from the Springboks prior to committing to his adopted country.

Just weeks before Janse van Rensburg pulled on the white jersey in Liverpool, South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus claimed in media reports that the midfielder had been “very keen” during discussions with Springboks officials, though selection ultimately went elsewhere.
“I only heard about it because my dad told me Rassie said it,” Janse van Rensburg said. “I would have probably loved to, but really every team I play for, I want to do my best and whatever comes after that, comes after that. When Rassie said he wanted to pick me, I was in the dark. I hadn’t heard anything from them. Whatever he said, whether that was true or not, I didn’t know about it.”
Criticism Over Residency Qualification
The inclusion of the former South Africa under-20 player in Steve Borthwick’s squad has drawn sharp debate within English rugby circles regarding the residency pathway. Former England international Danny Care stated publicly that Janse van Rensburg’s selection “doesn’t sit right,” while former centres Jeremy Guscott and Mike Tindall also raised questions about picking a foreign-born player ahead of domestic talent.
“It is understandable that there’s going to be some people that don’t like it and some people that do like it,” he said. “People probably still have their thoughts and how they feel about it. For me, I probably can’t prove them wrong. I just want to do my best for whichever team I play for. It’s an honour and a privilege to go to that next level of playing rugby.”
